Entrance to the Hotel

The Grand Hyatt Tokyo is located in Roppongi Hills. I may not be Weezer, but If I could make believe- I would stay in this place forever. Albeit much to the chagrin of my wallet. The location says it all. It’s one of those places that connected to the train station and a beautiful mall. But the prices are a bit..takai.

Location

Located in the Roppongi Hills district, about 3 or 4 minutes walk from the Roppongi station. This hotel has a lot of going for it.

Statue near the Roppongi Mall

There is shopping at the mall, food on several floors of the same mall, and we found this outstanding ramen place called Ippudo, which served some of the best life-changing ramen Iv’e had in a while. It seems to be a chain, so if you are in Tokyo, check it out.

It takes about 30 or so minutes (if there is no traffic) from Tokyo International Airport, also known as Haneda. And by train you can get here in about an hour by transferring 1 or 2 times (depending on your route).

Reminiscent of Shibuya Crossing, there is also the less famed Roppongi crossing which has a lot of foot traffic, even at night.

The heads

Regardless of how you get in, you will not miss the unmistakable giant heads in the Lobby, once you are past the unassuming front doors.

The Gym and Spa

The Spa and Gym were wonderful. I had a nice foot and hand massage by some lovely technicians who worked at the hotel and I came out refreshed and remade into a new man.

The gym was modern with a large heated pool and nice up-to-date machinery. I didn’t get the chance to workout here, it reminded me of my equinox membership and I pay hundreds of dollars a month for the privilege of using equipment like this. It was really cool, actually.

Check in Experience

As a globalist world of Hyatt member, I had quite a relaxing experience checking in to the Hotel. I chose to go to the executive lounge and complete my check in there. Thanks to that, I didn’t have to deal with any lines or wait at all really to get to my room. They served us a drink, and we could relax as they explained to us where the gym was, and where break fast was..

More on that later

They ended the engagement by showing us the room.

The Room

Thanks to my Globalist status, I was, in fact, upgraded to a Deluxe room with a hell of a view.

Tokyo Tower

The room itself was nice and spacious! I loved the TV, the design, and the furniture was arranged excellently. The bathroom was very nice, and I enjoyed the rainfall shower as well as the bidet. This is precisely what I was looking for when I booked this place.

So far, I have been warm on this place, but my main criticism I’d have to say about this room is the brick…oh I’m sorry I meant to say bed. I am so sorry, I just can’t tell the difference every time I lay on it. The pillows were the only reason I could sleep at all. Something about it being so firm also made me have to use the restroom more often. I can’t see this didn’t knock it down a few pegs for me.

Breakfast

But what about breakfast? So what if the bed isn’t the big comfy couch you’ve been (lack of) dreaming of! A place like this has to have some decent eats in the mornin, right?

WRONCK

The breakfast was the single biggest falloff since Yamcha’s reputation after dying to a saibaman.

Nothing hot, no meat, not much choice in fruit or cereals, hardly any selection at all. What is the point of this? I ended up getting lunch right after, every time. Is there some back alley deal with the local food places and this hotel?

A little, I’ll starve my customers, so you can brandish them with your high roppongi prices? Ha! That’ll show them.

On a more serious note, it was that bad. The only thing I liked about the breakfast was the view, and that old Japanese omotenashi.

Overall Score

This is sort of hard. On one hand, where this hotel excels is the location, location, location. It’s nice to walk around, easy to get to the train station and the room itself was fantastic..even if ANA’s chair supplier seemingly designed the mattresses. But the breakfast, and single attempt per day at cleaning the room by housekeeping, certainly is doing my opinion of them any favors.

If you are paying cash for this hotel? I'll give it a 3.5

Points stays are a little better, a 4/5 stars.

I'll average it out to:

3.75/5
